This is a problem.
According to onegreenplanet.org disposable razors are NOT recyclable. They are convenient and cheap. I’ve used them. Then I switched to using Venus Gillette.
This mostly plastic razor worked for me, but it doesn’t work for the planet. Just because it’s easy, doesn’t mean it’s the best option. The razors are in plastic containers that are then wrapped in plastic again. Double the plastic, double the UGH. I knew I had to change the way I was shaving, or stop shaving all together. The latter doesn’t work for me.
I made the switch to using a sustainable safety razor. No plastic here! It’s stainless steel handle and the replacement blades come in a little cardboard box.
At first I was really nervous to try this. The razor blades were bare and unattractive to me. I was used to using a blade surrounded by something colorful and moisturizing. I was hesitant but remained open minded.
I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was! I got a butterfly razor, it doesn’t come apart. I just twist the handle until it opens, carefully place a razor in there, twist it shut, then I’m ready to go!
Shaving cream… I don’t use any. I use a basic bar of soap and don’t have any issues. However, there are plenty of waste free shaving creams available and recipes if you feel like doing a DIY. When I’m done I moisturize with my Scrubee body butter from Lush. It’s a smooth finish!
